Mao Feng means Fur Peak. The tea takes its name from the tiny hairs (pekoe) on the buds and the fact the pointed shape of the dry leaf resembles mountains!  Mao Feng is made from 1 bud and 1 or 2 leaves which is a very common picking standard for all Chinese green teas. Mao Feng is one of the most well-known green teas from China.

Mao Feng is a very easy tea to brew and we suggest brewing for 4 or even 5 minutes- not the normal China green tea brewing parameters of 3 minutes. By brewing the tea for longer the nuttier and creamier notes are developed and yet the gentle after taste remains without any hint of bitterness. An easy tea to brew with a distinct flavour.

Green tea has been cultivated in China for 5,000 years but it was not until the 17th century Chinese tea makers started to produce tea in different ways (such as making black tea), to suit the foreign market.

Mao Feng is known as one of “the famous 10”; ten Chinese green teas which are famous the world over for their quality, history and provenance.

Our Mao Feng comes from Fujian and is made using the authentic Anhui cultivar, the Xiao zhu ye zhong variety, which originates from Anhui, the province celebrated as the origin of Mao Feng production. The tea is plucked in early spring before the Qing Ming festival, April 5th, when the leaves are at their best. The temperature and time of year plays a very important part in the quality and flavour of the tea and the earlier the pluck the sweeter the flavour will be. Mao Feng is a complex but very easy drinking and gentle green tea.

The dry leaf is a visual delight of slightly curved bottle green leaves and downy silver green buds. The aroma is of subtle herby notes and roasted green beans. The tea brews a delicate pale green releasing vegetal and nutty aromas. The liquor is light, refreshing and gentle with a vegetal sweetness and suggestions of hazelnuts and fresh grass leaving a smooth creamy mouthfeel

As this is such a delicious and easy tea it will go with most savoury food but especially good with salads, green vegetables or try with cheese for a really interesting combination.
